Nearing the quarter-century mark, Stampone D’Angelo Renzi DiPiero has grown from decidedly humble beginnings. Founders Joseph Stampone and Drew D’Angelo met during the early 1980s, when Joe was employed by an attorney for whom Drew worked as an independent contractor, trying cases. The first time the two men met, Drew had just returned from a trip to California. He was sporting jeans, a t-shirt, long hair and a beard. Drew was asked on the spot to argue a motion for Joe’s employer, and Joe was instructed to trade his suit, shirt and tie for Drew’s jeans and t-shirt. “Devising creative solutions to unexpected problems is one of the hallmarks of a good attorney,” Joe said of the impromptu costu
me change. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Joe and Drew founded their firm in 1983. They knew that their assertive personalities and talents as litigators would be a good match, and they wanted to serve the residents of Northeast Philadelphia, where both men had grown up. To that end, Joe and Drew set up shop next to Joe’s parents’ house. Their office was a one-room space, and they secured their first client by sitting on the sidewalk in front of the tiny building. Joe and Drew remained in the one-room office for six months while they awaited completion of more formal (and spacious) offices.
Then called Stampone & D’Angelo, the fledgling firm saw its first significant victory when Joe and Drew represented one of Joe’s childhood friends in a product liability lawsuit. Tragically, Joe’s friend, who was an ironworker, fell to his death while rebuilding the Platt Memorial Bridge. Joe and Drew were able to prove that the fatal accident resulted from a defective product that had been designed and manufactured by the general contractor that was hired to complete the project, and multiple subcontractors.
The firm grew quickly as satisfied clients recommended Joe and Drew to their families and friends. It didn’t hurt, of course, that Joe and Drew’s athletic endeavors – baseball and football – made both men well known in their communities. Joe played baseball for North Catholic High School and attended LaSalle University on an athletic scholarship. Drew, class president and a standout football player for George Washington High School, later attended Temple University. Today, Drew coaches youth soccer and basketball while Joe owns a semi-professional baseball franchise and serves as a coach. Prior to moving into the semi-professional ranks, Joe spent more than 20 years coaching youth sports.
The firm became Stampone D’Angelo & Renzi in 2001, with the addition of Nicholas Renzi. Nick had been with the firm for 14 years at the time. A South Philadelphia native, Nick is known for his aggressive, yet hu
morous personality.
In 2004, the firm added Andrew DiPiero, Jr., and the office moved into its newly renovated building at 500 Cottman Avenue to better accommodate its growing size and the needs of its clients. Andrew, like Nick, hails from South Philadelphia. He brought vast trial experience and a particular penchant for medical malpractice litigation to the firm.
With a restaurant owner (Joe) in residence, food is not surprisingly a big part of life at Stampone D’Angelo Renzi DiPiero. And much like good cooking, the Cottman Avenue building that the firm now inhabits was a labor of love. It was scheduled for demolition before Stampone D’Angelo Renzi DiPiero acquired it. But the firm recognized the building’s potential and saved it from destruction. “Completing a total renovation of the building was not an easy task, but preserving part of a community and bringing commerce to the area made it worth the effort,” Drew said.
As Joe and Drew’s neighborhood roots have supplied them with an ever-growing client list, they have not lost sight of their strong commitment to protecting individual rights in the face of large corporations and insurance companies. While hard-fought litigation is a hallmark of the now nine-attorney firm, it is personal attention and a family atmosphere that truly sets them apart. The firm maintains a welcoming environment and is truly invested in the people who turn to its lawyers for help. At Stampone D’Angelo Renzi DiPiero, clients can expect to find responsive attorneys who will work hard to represent their best interests and answer all of their questions.
“We respect and value our clients and our professional responsibility to them,” Joe said of the firm’s attorneys and staff. “We represent Pennsylvania’s and New Jersey’s most important commodities – their people.”
The attorneys at Stampone D’Angelo Renzi DiPiero want you to think of them as “your” lawyers. “If you have legal matters that need attention, we are here for you,” Joe said. “If we cannot handle a matter, we will refer you to a competent firm that can. And please feel free to refer us to your family, friends and neighbors for their legal needs. We always welcome the opportunity to help.”
