Asbestos Claims

AsbestosAsbestos is a long, thin mineral fiber. Asbestos is commonly used in insulation, brake linings, roofing shingles and other commercial products. Prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers can result in serious injury and even death. Long-term inhalation of asbestos has been known to cause asbestosis, or scarring of the lungs; mesothelioma, a rare cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen; and lung cancer. The most common source of asbestos exposure is the workplace. Workers who regularly handle or are exposed to asbestos are at risk of developing asbestos-related health problems. These illnesses may not show up for as many as 10 to 20 years after exposure, making asbestos-related diagnoses difficult. Asbestos may also be brought into a worker’s home on his or her shoes and/or clothing, resulting in second-hand asbestos exposure. Other sources of exposure are nearby asbestos mines or factories, renovations of buildings containing asbestos products and improper disposal of asbestos products.
